Is My PC Ready for Windows 11?

Five quick questions about your computer, each with simple steps for finding the answer. Your result updates as you go, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Windows 11 Checker

A website can't see inside your computer, so this is a checklist you fill in yourself. Not sure about something? Open "How do I check?" under that question, or just pick "Not sure".

1 Is the processor an Intel Core 8th generation or newer, or an AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer?
How do I check?

Open Settings > System > About and look at "Processor".

On Intel, the first digit after i3, i5, i7, or i9 is usually the generation: an i5-8250U is 8th gen (a Yes), an i5-7200U is 7th gen (a No). From 10th gen on it's two digits, like i7-10510U. Newer "Core Ultra" and "Core 5 / Core 7" chips count as a Yes.

On AMD, the first digit of the Ryzen model number is the series: a Ryzen 5 3500U is 3000 series (a Yes).

Pentium, Celeron, Atom, or still unsure? Microsoft's free PC Health Check app will check it for you.

2 Does it have TPM 2.0?
How do I check?

TPM is a small security chip. Press Windows key + R, type tpm.msc, and press Enter.

Under "TPM Manufacturer Information", look for "Specification Version: 2.0". That's a Yes. If it says "Compatible TPM cannot be found", answer No: it's often just switched off.

3 Does it use UEFI and support Secure Boot?
How do I check?

Press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. Stay on "System Summary".

If "BIOS Mode" says UEFI and "Secure Boot State" says On or Off, answer Yes (Off just means it's supported but not switched on yet). If BIOS Mode says Legacy, or Secure Boot State says Unsupported, answer No.

4 Does it have at least 4 GB of RAM?
How do I check?

Open Settings > System > About and look at "Installed RAM". 4 GB is the minimum; 8 GB or more makes Windows 11 much more comfortable to use.

5 Is the main drive at least 64 GB?
How do I check?

Open File Explorer and click This PC. Under the C: drive it says something like "120 GB free of 237 GB": the second number is the drive's size. If it's nearly full, you'll also want to free up some space before upgrading.

These are Microsoft's minimum requirements for installing Windows 11 through the normal upgrade. For the full walk-through, see the Windows 11 upgrade guide.
